Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Public Insurance Adjuster?

Public Insurance Adjusters (“PIA”) are licensed, insured, and bonded professionals who are retained by policyholders to assist in documenting, filing, and monitoring the progress of insurance claims.  A PIA works for the policyholder, property management entity, or property owner of the property that experienced the loss.  PIAs do not work for the insurance companies. We have a legal obligation to look out for your best financial interest of the insured in the claims process.

The role of a PIA is to absorb the stress and burden of the property claims process from the policyholder. The insurance claims process is a time-consuming and often adversarial process for those who have experienced a loss.

Why do you need a Public Insurance Adjuster?

Whether or not you need to hire a Public Insurance Adjuster (“PIA”) depends on the specific circumstances of your claim. If you have a simple claim that is likely to be settled quickly and easily, you may not need to hire a PIA. However, if your claim is complex, or if you are not confident in your ability to negotiate with your insurance company, a PIA can be a valuable asset.

The extremely stressful period following a loss is a difficult time for many home and business owners alike. It is important to remember that the Insurance companies are for-profit companies. The main expense an insurance company has is paying out on claims. It makes business sense for an insurance company to control all of their costs, claim payouts included. Insurance companies have many adjusters, senior adjusters, claims desk managers, and lawyers who help the insurance company manage its claims losses.

What are the benefits of working with Sentinel Pacific Inc?

The insurance claims process is often adversarial. This is because the insurance company and the policyholder have different goals. The insurance company wants to pay as little as possible, while the policyholder wants to get the maximum settlement amount they are entitled to so that they can be made whole.

At Sentinel Pacific Inc…

  • We have the experience and knowledge to help you get the maximum settlement possible.
  • We can negotiate with your insurance company on your behalf.
  • We can help you understand your insurance policy and coverage options.
  • We can keep you updated on the status of your claim.
  • We can resolve disputes with your insurance company.
  • We have a network of general contractors and other experts to help you!

What should I expect to pay out-of-pocket?

Nothing. PIAs typically charge a percentage of the settlement as their fee. The amount of the fee varies from state to state, but it is typically between 10% and 30% depending on the size and complexity of your claim. During a declared disaster, the fee amount is also adjusted between 10% – 15% depending on the state where the loss occurred. This is regulated by your state’s Department of Insurance division and the State Insurance Commissioner.

The insurance claims process can be adverserial.
Here’s why…
  • The insurance company and it’s employees/contractors have a legal obligation to primarily look out for the financial interest of the insurance company. The insurance company is a for-profit organization.
  • The policyholder is often not an expert in insurance law. Most policyholders do not have the knowledge or experience to negotiate with an insurance company. They may not know what their rights are, or they may not be able to advocate for themselves effectively.
  • The insurance company has a financial incentive to deny or underpay claims. Insurance companies make money by collecting premiums from policyholders. The more claims they pay out, the less money they make. This can create a financial incentive for insurance companies to deny or underpay claims.
